Honoring Historical Black Women Trailblazers

Dr. Gladys West

Dr. Patricia Bath

Barbara Jordan
We honor the remarkable contributions of Black women trailblazers who have left an indelible mark on history. In this article we pay homage to the courageous pioneers whose resilience, innovation, and unwavering commitment to excellence continue to inspire us.
In the realm of technology, one name stands out: Dr. Gladys West. Born and raised in Virginia, Dr. West's groundbreaking work laid the foundation for the development of the Global Positioning System (GPS). Her mathematical calculations and algorithms were instrumental in accurately determining the shape of the Earth's surface, a crucial step in the creation of GPS technology. Despite facing racial and gender barriers, Dr. West's brilliance and determination propelled her to become a trailblazer in the field of science and technology.
In the field of medicine, Dr. Patricia Bath's contributions revolutionized the treatment of cataracts and restored vision for countless patients worldwide. As the first African American woman to complete a residency in ophthalmology, Dr. Bath invented the Laserphaco Probe, a device used during cataract surgery to improve precision and reduce complications. Her pioneering work not only transformed eye care but also paved the way for greater diversity and inclusion in the medical field.
In the realm of politics, Barbara Jordan broke barriers and championed equality throughout her career. As the first African American woman elected to the Texas Senate since Reconstruction, Jordan made history with her impassioned advocacy for civil rights and social justice. Her powerful oratory and unwavering commitment to the rule of law left an indelible mark on American politics and inspired generations of leaders to fight for equality and justice for all.
These women, and countless others like them, defied the odds, shattered barriers, and paved the way for future generations of Black women to thrive and excel. As we honor their legacies this Women's History Month, let us remember their courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to making the world a better place for all.
Stay tuned in as we continue our journey of celebration and discovery, highlighting the achievements of contemporary Black women trailblazers who are shaping our world today.

ADVICE FROM AN INSPIRATIONAL BLACK WOMAN LEADER
“[Don’t] let anyone convince you that your dream, your vision to be an entrepreneur, is something that you shouldn’t do. What often happens is that people who are well-meaning, who really care for us, are afraid for us and talk us out of it.”
-Cathy Hughes, Entrepreneur, Business Executive, and Radio and TV Personality (April 22, 1947 – Present)
